Unlike other towns of la Safor, Gandia was founded after the Christian conquest, therefore it is a town of new plant. This is why we can have documentary evidence of many events, such as its fortification. The new settlement was quickly protected with a walled enclosure. In 1255 Jaume I raised 3,000 salaries for the construction of the wall and Jaume II granted in 1308 an exception in the payment of taxes to conclude the work of the walls.

This first enclosure is characterized by a more or less rectangular design surrounded by a pit, with square and square towers on the angles and scattered regularly throughout the layout. The construction technique used is the mudwall.

The Duke Francesc de Borja left a strong imprint in the city. There are numerous samples of his mandate, such as la Torrassa del Pi, one of the defensive towers that protected the city.

Most of the walls were destroyed or used as walls in the construction of new buildings in the 19th century. Towers and elements hidden between the houses of the historic centre still remain. On the side of the river Serpis we can see part of the wall.

Nowadays la Torrassa del Pi, also known as Torrejó del Pi in Gandia, hosts la “Crida” Fallera where the town is invited to participate in las Fallas.
